Map of Property Tax Rate by ZIP Code Area 2015
UPDATE 4/15/19: Please find a newer version of this map with 2018 property tax records here!
A couple weeks ago, a client of mine asked about the difference between property tax rates in the extended Austin metro area. As a visual person, my first thought was to start Googling “map of property tax rate in Austin by neighborhood.” After a few other iterations of this, I eventually gave up. This map, nor any visually-pleasing map, did not exist on the internet.
Because data analysis was a big part of my past, I nerded up and built this:
This is a map, split up by zip codes, of the tax rate differential in Austin. The lighter colors represent a lower tax rate while the darker colors represent a higher tax rate. To get your bearings, 78705 is West Campus and the white dot is UT.
I created this map by collecting recent sale data in the MLS and massaging the data in Excel to eventually create this “heat map” of Austin area tax rates by zip code. With the exception of far west Austin (near Lake Travis), you can see that the farther you get from Downtown Austin the higher the property taxes.
Please note, this article was published July 1, 2015. If you are reading this more than 1 year past publish date, the data and trends shown here are too dated and are unreliable. Please contact me with any questions and/or for updated information!
